USAT Liberty Wreck

The US Navy transport ship was hit by a Japanese Navy torpedo in January 1942 and ran aground on the beach of Tulamben. In 1963, the volcanic eruption caused the Liberty ship to sink from the beach into the sea, which is now the location of the wreck dive site.

This shipwreck is tilted on the beach, extending from 5 meters deep to 30 meters deep, with a total length of about 130 meters . Therefore, you don't need to take a boat to reach this dive site. You can dive from the beach and swim for a few minutes to reach it. You can see angel fish, various nudibranchs, small school of barracudas, giant groupers, and groups of sweetlips.

Night diving is a must-try here! Especially on full moon days, you might be able to see the Spanish dancers nudibranch. If you can arrange a sunrise dive, around 6 o'clock, you can watch the sunrise from shore and dive down to see the Tyndall effect of sun rays underwater.

In addition to the most famous Liberty, there is a more complete shipwreck in Kubu, further north of Tulamben . This shipwreck has three stories for divers to explore. However, because it is relatively deep, entering the cabins for exploration requires you to be Advanced diver. OW-level divers can explore the top of the wreck.

To help you quickly understand the Tulamben dive site, We compiled a Tulamben Dive Sites Map. With it, you can see at a glance where you can go and what diving is suitable for you
